Matcha is made from green tea leaves from the young shoots of the plant. Three weeks before harvesting, the leaves are shaded and the change in sunlight raises the levels of chlorophyll, which is rich in nutrients. After harvesting, the leaves are steamed to stop fermentation, which would reduce the valuable elements. After drying, the leaves are ground in a quern. This produces a light green powder.
The traditional Japanese Matcha tea ceremony is strictly defined. To properly prepare the life-giving beverage, you need a special set of utensils:
– A ritual bamboo bowl (chavan),
– Bamboo stirrer (chasen),
– Bamboo spoon (chashaku).
The traditional bamboo bowl is a vessel whose design and workmanship resemble waves. The original manufacturing process makes each bowl unique. The chavan bowl through its structure and unique lines reflects the Japanese philosophy of ikigai peace. The bowl has a flat bottom and ergonomic shape which makes it easy to prepare the drink and prevents matcha from spilling while pouring it into a cup.
Traditional bamboo stirrer is an essential tool of the Japanese matcha tea ceremony. Perfect, handmade spikes carved into a piece of bamboo by artisans whose skills have been passed down from generation to generation. When using a chasen to froth matcha, it is best to keep your wrist calm and relaxed to give the tea a perfectly effervescent consistency.
Chashaku is the traditional spoon for serving matcha and an integral part of the tea ceremony. The curved part of the spoon is used to scoop a small amount of the raw material and place it in the ritual bowl.
